On April 16, 2009, Keri McKenna, a participant in our Community Skill-Building Program, took part in the Champions of Art Show. This is the 10th annual Champions of Art Show sponsored by the Westmoreland Intermediate Unit. The art show was held at the Youngwood campus of Westmoreland County Community College and displayed art from individuals of all ages with varying abilities.
Those who entered had multiple categories to choose from and then could create a two dimensional work of art in a variety of paintings and drawing mediums. Keri chose to paint a picture of a sunrise over the ocean with two pelicans flying across it.
Keri is part of the adaptive art classes at the UCP/CLASS Centre. The classes, initiated by Centre instructors David Peters and Brian Furman, have grown to three adaptive art classes each with four or five people in them. Several instructors have began to teach the classes making it easier for more participants to get involved. Most of the adaptive equipment is created to suit each individual based on their needs.
Keri's painting won a People's Choice Award, a first place blue ribbon, and The Best of the Best Trophy in the Adult Division. Not only did Keri sweep up the awards, but she also sold her painting! It was a wonderful evening filled with excitement for Keri and her friends and family.
Congratulations Keri!
