Opening the Doors to the Community - By UCP Pittsburgh and UCP Kids

Opening the Doors to Community is an educational series that provides helpful information for recreation facilities, community centers, religious organizations (churches, synagogues, mosques, etc.), and any business, organization, or agency that wishes to become more welcoming to all people.

The Opening Doors series will also prove beneficial for businesses that employ or want to employ individuals with disabilities and/or businesses that serve or want to serve individuals with disabilities. The series is also highly useful for families of children with disabilities. The information contained in Opening Doors will aid families in successfully approaching organizations as they assist their child in becoming a valued member of the community.

This series consists of four booklets developed by the staff at UCP Pittsburgh to empower organizations to welcome individuals of all abilities:

  1. The Key to Welcoming was developed as a starting point for a facility to think about creating a welcoming atmosphere.
  2. The Key to Achieving Your Goals is a step-by-step guide to creating a center that welcomes individuals of all abilities.
  3. The Key to Friendship provides strategies to facilitate friendships between people with and without disabilities.
  4. The Key to Community Resources is a comprehensive list of local and national resources related to disability.
